ALEX Van Halen tried to reassemble Van Halen last year with Joe Satriani replacing his late brother, according to former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted.

Newsted told the Palm Beach Post he was invited to Los Angeles to rehearse with the proposed new iteration of the band but decided against participating.

The revelations about Satriani and the timing of “six months ago” were in reporters’ speech in the lengthy interview.

“How could you?” Newsted was quoted as saying.

“There’s nobody that can top it, so how do you show it honour? I didn’t want it to be viewed as a money grab. And then it kind of just all fizzled.”

The news that drummer Alex Van Halen tried to re-assemble the iconic band will send shockwaves around the rock world.

And the idea that it would be done without Eddie’s son Wolf, who vowed that the band would never play again following his father’s death on October 6, 2020, will also intrigue many.

There was no information on who the singer for the project was to be.

Before Eddie Van Halen’s death, an all-star tour involving all current and previous members was in the planning stages but did not go ahead because of the guitar hero’s ailing health.
