By NOODS NEWELL
WELCOME to my better-late-than never (bloody online/home schooling) review of the incredibly cool Monks In Sexyland by part-Sydney part-South Coast punkers The Owen Guns.
Kicking of with “A Monk Goes To Sexyland” you get some of the tastiest ear coffee in the form of distorted bass you could wish for and the song sets the pace for what’s to come.
The tune “Trans Rights Are Human Rights” not only pissed off some judgmental narrow minded people but made its way to number one the 100 percent Independent Singles Charts and number 12 on the Independent Label Singles.
The personal highlight for me is the closing track “For The Second Time…No”. Not only is it a killer tune but our 10-year-old kid provides one of the voices and the end as he screams “NOOOOOOO” with the same passion as when I try to detangle his hair (he is determined to get it like Melvins Buzz Osbourne).
(The editor said this made me too close to the band and he didn’t want to run this review. But I explained the Owen Guns just asked people to send in audio. We weren’t in the studio or backstage consuming their rider or anything. I guess it still exposes me as liking the band, which is apparently OK … just).
After it’s all said and done it’s eight tracks in less than five minutes and it is the best eight tracks strung together since The Dickies Stukas Over Disneyland (check that one out too).
If The Owen Guns are doing a gig near you go check it out. Australia has offered up some great punk bands over the years … from The Saints to Hard-Ons to Frenzal Rhomb.
The Owen Guns will be sure to be added to the list of the great ones…
