HEY, SO Living Colour started all this funk metal business, huh?
Well, do you think they are gonna take any credit for it? Not on yer life, sonny Jim!
Living Colour have staked an irresistible claim for longevity and across-the-board credibility with their second album, an opus that actually encompasses a melange of styles.
On their debut album, Vivid, there wasn’t much funk in Living Colour’s sound, just an almost-silent infiltration of the basic rock form, borne mostly out of Vernon Reid’s seering guitar work.
However, as if they’re scared that people have already figured out what they’re about, Living Colour have gone crazy on Time’s Up and have emerged looking consummate and classy, rather than falling into the trap of becoming pretentious psueds.
There is thrash (yes!) in the form rockers such as “Elvis Is Dead”, some insidious rifferama from the album’s top track, “Information Overload”, and catchy commercial rock on “This is The Life” (my second favourite).
There’s also some low-slung funk rock, shown on “Someone Like You” and even a pinch of elevator music in “Ology”!
Living Colour are going to be very important this decade.
They may never be hugely popular because of what they’re doing, but future musicians are going to benefit immeasurably from their groundwork.
